King Charles is nearing completion of Poundbury, his vision of an idyllic model town set to be one of the nation’s most desirable areas by 2028. Situated on Duchy of Cornwall land near Dorchester in Dorset, Poundbury embodies the King’s utopian ideals, blending private and affordable housing with shops, workplaces, schools, and medical facilities.

The project, initiated in the late 1980s, has flourished, boasting approximately 2,320 homes, 4,600 residents, and 240 businesses. Poundbury’s acclaim surged when it was named one of Britain’s best places to live by The Sunday Times.

Currently, the town is undergoing its final phase of development, with the North West Quadrant slated for completion in 2028. Poundbury’s growth, guided by principles of urban planning and architecture, emphasizes beauty, local identity, and mixed-use integration.

Despite initial skepticism, Poundbury’s architectural diversity and community integration have garnered praise. Social housing is seamlessly integrated, and essential amenities are within a 10-minute walk. The town’s sustainability initiatives, including renewable energy sources and plastic reduction campaigns, reflect a forward-thinking ethos.
