Princess Margaret’s Grandson Showcases Remarkable Pottery Skills

Sam Chatto, 28, grandson of Princess Margaret, has recently dazzled audiences with his extraordinary talent in pottery. The son of Lady Sarah Chatto, Sam displayed his craftsmanship in a video shared by a Japanese artist.

Having pursued a degree in History of Art at the University of Edinburgh, Sam graduated in 2018. The shared video captured him skillfully shaping clay into a delicate bowl, showcasing his proficiency in pottery.

Donning a navy blue shirt paired with baggy trousers and a vibrant red apron, the young royal immersed himself in the creative process. The accompanying caption, translated from Japanese, evoked a serene ambiance, describing the studio as filled with the melodious chirping of birds, likening a tea tree to a butterfly, and highlighting the London-based artist’s rhythmic motions.

Following the artistic lineage of his parents, Sam’s mother, Lady Sarah, is a photographer, while his father, Antony Armstrong-Jones, honed his skills at the Camberwell School of Art.

In 2019, Sam enrolled in the Royal Drawing School, further nurturing his creative journey. Currently based in West Sussex, he channels his love for nature into crafting ceramics inspired by the outdoors.

Reflecting on his passion, Sam shared, “I’m working in clay to create functional and sculptural wood-fired ceramics from my home and studio in West Sussex.” He recounted his childhood fondness for crafting imaginary landscapes, which naturally drew him to clay later in life.

Sam’s creative spark reignited during a transformative visit to North Shore Pottery in Caithness during the summer of 2017. Disenchanted with his stint in the commercial art market, he devoted his weekends to establishing a home studio, ultimately constructing a wood-fired kiln in his garden.

With his remarkable talent and unwavering dedication, Sam Chatto is not only honoring his family’s artistic legacy but also carving out his own path in the world of pottery.
