Chicago fans received a monumental announcement on April 15 when the Sky revealed their draft picks, Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese, indicating a significant shift in the team’s dynamics. These former SEC rivals, NCAA national champions, and highly anticipated rookies are now joining forces in their inaugural WNBA season.
The Sky’s roster looks markedly different from their 2021 WNBA championship-winning team, which boasted stars like Candace Parker, Kahleah Copper, and Courtney Vandersloot under the guidance of coach James Wade. However, this year brings a new era for the Sky, with former WNBA star Teresa Weatherspoon making her coaching debut in the league. Despite the changes, there’s optimism that the Sky can remain competitive.
Weatherspoon’s coaching tenure has already shown promise, with a preseason win and loss under her belt, the highlight being a dominant 48-point victory over the Liberty. With rookies like Reese learning from seasoned veterans like Weatherspoon and Diamond DeShields, there’s a sense of potential for growth and success. Reese has particularly impressed, showcasing her scoring prowess with 13 points in each preseason game, along with a total of 16 rebounds.
Unfortunately, Cardoso’s professional debut will be delayed due to a shoulder injury, sidelining her for a few weeks. While Chicago fans may have to wait a bit longer to see her in action, anticipation for her first game will only continue to build until then.
