The ‘American Idol’ judge anxiously waited while crew members and Luke Bryan tried to fix the sharp chrome top.
Katy Perry is known for her bold fashion choices on American Idol, but her latest ensemble caused a near-disastrous wardrobe malfunction during a recent episode. In an Instagram video shared on April 15, the 39-year-old singer revealed that her silver chrome top had broken while she was seated at the judges’ table.
In the video, Katy expressed her distress as crew members and Luke Bryan attempted to fix her top with tools. Despite their efforts, the unique piece proved challenging to manage. However, Katy managed to maintain her composure and later praised contestant Roman Collins’ performance of James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”
“That song broke my top off. I guess it’s a woman’s world,” Katy jokingly remarked before briefly taking cover under the table with a pillow, noting, “It’s a family show.”
Addressing the incident with Entertainment Tonight, Katy clarified that she didn’t consider it a wardrobe malfunction. “It wasn’t really a malfunction. It was just a moment for television,” she explained. “Every season, it seems I rip my pants. I think it’s the physical comedy, the physical expression side of me that just wants to burst at the seams.”
Katy referred to a previous viral moment in 2022 when her pants ripped while performing “Teenage Dream” on American Idol.

Adding to the recent moment’s humor, Lionel Richie jokingly accused Luke of being the culprit behind Katy’s wardrobe mishap.
“Luke knocked the top off, I’ll tell you all the truth,” Lionel quipped to ET. “And then, Luke spent the rest of the time going, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.’ But he was definitely apologetic and then he tried to put it back together and that looked worse than the whole thing.”
Luke, however, defended his actions, stating that he was simply trying to assist Katy by attempting to fix the chrome top with pliers.
“At this point in the game, I’m like, ‘What do you need? What do you need? You need a pair of pliers? You need a towel? A bathrobe? What do you need?'” Luke recounted
