Angel Reese, a former standout for LSU women’s basketball, embraced the moniker “Bayou Barbie” during her debut season in Baton Rouge, garnering additional attention when she played a pivotal role in leading the Tigers to the 2023 national championship.
Following her selection by the Chicago Sky as the seventh overall pick in the WNBA draft, Reese expressed her readiness to adopt a new nickname as she transitions to the Windy City. Taking to social media, Reese solicited suggestions for her new moniker, seeking something as catchy and endearing as “Bayou Barbie” for her time in Chicago.
“I need a new name now that I’m in Chicago lol something cute that is catchy like Bayou Barbie,” Reese quipped in her post on X, inviting fans to contribute their ideas.
The pursuit of a marketable nickname holds financial significance for Reese, particularly now that she has joined the ranks of the WNBA. During her tenure at LSU, Reese attempted to trademark “Bayou Barbie,” but her application was rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in October.
Despite the option to contest the ruling, the 6-foot-3 forward opted not to pursue further action. Reese’s attorney, speaking to On3, explained that they chose not to challenge the decision due to Mattel’s ownership of the Barbie trademark.
As Reese embarks on this new chapter of her basketball journey, fans eagerly offered suggestions for her new nickname, including Chief Reese, Chi-Reese, Breezy Blue, and Chi-Town Angel, reflecting the excitement and anticipation surrounding her transition to the Chicago Sky.
