‘All I could think about was: must have kids,’ the ‘Breakfast Club’ actress said in a new interview.
Molly Ringwald recently opened up in an interview, delving into her journey of motherhood with her daughter, Mathilda Ereni Gianopoulos, now 20 years old. The Breakfast Club actress, aged 56, shared insights into her experience of becoming a parent alongside her husband, Panio Gianopoulos.
Reflecting on the conception of her daughter, Molly humorously recalled the unique setting: “I believe that Mathilda was conceived in the dressing room at Studio 54 right at the end of my run playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret in 2003.” She added, “It’s so Mathilda to be conceived in such an iconic place.”
The Sixteen Candles star also shared her perspective on the timing of motherhood, expressing that while she always desired children, it took some time before she embarked on that journey. “I always knew I wanted to have children, but it took me a while,” she explained. Molly further elaborated on the challenges she faced, noting, “I was 36 when she was born. At that age, the biological clock is a real thing, and it had kind of become deafening. All I could think about was: must have kids.” Her candid reflections offer a glimpse into the complexities and joys of parenthood, especially for those who choose to start their journey later in life.
Following Mathilda’s arrival in October 2003, Molly Ringwald fondly recalled the enchantment she and her husband, Panio, felt upon her birth. Describing the moment, Molly expressed, “My husband, Panio, an author and book editor, and I were both enchanted from the moment Mathilda was born.” Despite her premature arrival, Mathilda captivated them with her big, beautiful eyes.
As Mathilda grew, Molly reminisced about her daughter’s early years, noting her innate sense of humor and infectious laughter even before she could speak. Reflecting on those precious moments, Molly shared, “I have recordings of her laughing, which I listen to when I want a little pick-me-up.”
Following in her mother’s footsteps, Mathilda ventured into acting with her feature film debut in The Idea of You earlier this year, alongside reportedly pursuing modeling opportunities. Alongside Mathilda, Molly and Panio are parents to Roman and Adele.
In discussing the challenges of motherhood, Molly candidly addressed the struggle of balancing her career as an actress and writer with her responsibilities as a parent. Acknowledging the difficulty of relinquishing control over her time, Molly shared, “The hardest thing about motherhood was realizing that my time was not my own.” Given her career’s demands, including frequent travel and a hectic schedule, Molly emphasized the importance of stability for her children. Grateful for her husband’s support and stability, Molly highlighted their collaborative effort in navigating parenthood and striving for balance.
