According to an attorney for Ron Goldman’s family, O.J.’s debt accrued in interest since he was ordered to pay them in 1997.
Following the recent passing of 76-year-old O.J. Simpson, reports suggest that he left behind a substantial debt to Ron Goldman’s family. According to David Cook, the attorney representing Goldman’s family, Simpson allegedly owed millions of dollars, accumulated through interest over several decades.
“He passed away without making amends,” Cook expressed to PEOPLE. “He had no intention of giving anything, not a penny, not a nickel to Fred, never, under any circumstances.”
In 1997, Simpson was ordered to pay $33.5 million to the families of Ron Goldman and his ex-wife Nicole Brown after being found liable in a wrongful death lawsuit. Cook disclosed that this debt has since ballooned to $114 million due to accrued interest, with the court judgment renewed as recently as 2022.
PEOPLE reported that legal documents from the year of 2022 revealed that Simpson had only paid the Goldman family $133,000 since 1997. Cook added, “He [still] owes on the current status of the judgment.”
The attorney also pointed out that the Goldman family is looking into hiring lawyers in the states of Nevada, Florida and California to figure out where Simpson’s money will be now that he is dead.
“We need to get a lawyer or a number of lawyers who deal with this, very smart people to determine who it is or who it would be, and [start] taking depositions from people and/or finding out who they are and what information we need,” Cook explained to the outlet. “It’s a big deal.”

On June 12, 1994, tragedy struck when O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend Ron Goldman were brutally stabbed to death outside her Los Angeles home. Simpson faced charges for their murders, leading to a highly publicized trial that extended from 1994 to 1995, ultimately resulting in his acquittal.
Despite the acquittal in the criminal trial, Fred Goldman, Ron’s father, pursued justice through a civil lawsuit filed against Simpson in 1997. The jury in this case found Simpson liable for the deaths of both Brown and Ron Goldman.
The news of Simpson’s passing was conveyed by his children on Thursday, April 11, 2024. In response, Fred Goldman issued a statement to various media outlets, emphasizing the enduring pain of losing his son: “This serves as a stark reminder of how long Ron has been absent from our lives and how deeply we continue to mourn him. Today, our focus remains solely on the profound loss of my son and Nicole. Nothing else takes precedence over that.”
