Kate Martin, who initially attended the WNBA draft to support her Iowa teammate Caitlin Clark, unexpectedly found herself drafted by the Las Vegas Aces as the 18th overall pick, expressing a mix of emotions but ultimately excitement for the opportunity she received, surrounded by her former Iowa teammates and embraced by Hawkeyes assistant coach Jan Jensen.
“There are a lot of emotions right now,” Martin said in an interview on ESPN. “I’m really happy to be here. I was here to support Caitlin, but I was hoping to hear my name called. All I wanted was an opportunity and I got it. I’m really excited.”
“I’m super excited for the opportunity. I have a really good work ethic,” Martin said.
She played a pivotal role in Iowa’s journey to the NCAA title game for the second consecutive year and concluded her collegiate career with impressive stats, including 1,299 points, 756 rebounds, and 473 assists. Alongside Clark, who was selected first by Indiana, Iowa celebrated having two players drafted for the first time since 1998. Training camp for the league commences on April 28, with the season officially beginning on May 14.
Despite not having any first-round picks, the Aces capitalized on three second-round choices, including selecting Syracuse guard Dyaisha Fair, the third-leading scorer in NCAA Division I history, as the 16th pick. Additionally, they drafted Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley, who is currently sidelined due to a torn ACL, marking the end of her season as she appeared on crutches during the draft.
