Caitlin Clark approaches her position as one of college athletics’ foremost figures with utmost seriousness.

The standout player for the Iowa Hawkeyes, widely anticipated to be selected as the top pick in the upcoming WNBA draft, recently shared her thoughts with TODAY, shedding light on her aspirations to inspire the next wave of young athletes.

In a teaser from the forthcoming interview slated for April 15, Clark reflects on her childhood influences and expresses her desire to have a similar impact on the aspiring athletes who watch her compete.

“As a child, I looked up to professional women’s basketball and soccer players, aspiring to follow in their footsteps,” she remarks ahead of the WNBA draft. “Recognizing the profound influence this can have on young girls is incredibly important to me.”

Continuing, she adds, “That’s why I always strive to make time for them. Witnessing their excitement, hearing them cheer my name or don my jersey — those moments are truly timeless.”

The WNBA draft looms just days after the conclusion of Clark’s illustrious college basketball journey.

Her Iowa Hawkeyes suffered a setback, falling to the South Carolina Gamecocks in a hard-fought 87-75 defeat during the NCAA women’s championship game on April 7.

Clark showcased her prowess from the outset, tallying an impressive 18 points in the opening quarter and concluding with a game-high 30 points. Despite her remarkable performance, victory eluded the Hawkeyes. This marked their second consecutive loss in the championship, following a defeat to LSU in 2023.Caitlin Clark's salary shows WNBA players deserve more money | The Seattle Times

While an NCAA championship eluded her, Clark’s collegiate career is adorned with numerous accomplishments. In March, the 22-year-old guard shattered a 54-year-old record, becoming the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I basketball history, surpassing LSU icon “Pistol Pete” Maravich’s previous record of 3,667 points.

Additionally, she clinched the Big Ten Player of the Year title for the third consecutive season.

Clark’s talent has garnered acclaim from basketball luminaries. Following her team’s victory on April 7, South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley lauded Clark’s impact on the sport.

“I want to extend my gratitude to Caitlin Clark for elevating our sport. She has been a driving force,” Staley remarked. “And this isn’t just limited to her collegiate journey; it will continue when she becomes the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft.”

Staley concluded, “She will undoubtedly elevate the league as well. Caitlin Clark, if you’re listening, you’re a true legend of our game. We salute you.”

Reflecting on the loss in a press conference, Clark expressed mixed emotions, emphasizing the significance of the game.

“Yes, it’s disappointing to come up short in this game. But I’m also immensely proud — of myself, my teammates, and our program,” she stated.
