“Frustration Mounts as Washington Mystics Fans Encounter Ticket Cancellations for Caitlin Clark Game at Capital One Arena”
Some basketball enthusiasts in the D.C. area are expressing frustration after their tickets were unexpectedly canceled for the highly-anticipated game between the Washington Mystics and the Indiana Fever in June, featuring star point guard Caitlin Clark.
While ticket holders who purchased through Ticketmaster have the option to reclaim their seats, those who bought from third-party vendors may find themselves out of luck. The game was originally slated to be held at the Entertainment & Sports Arena (ESA), which accommodates 4,200 spectators. However, due to overwhelming demand, the venue was switched to the Capital One Arena, with a seating capacity of 20,000. This venue change has caused complications for fans who secured tickets for the original location, with some reporting ticket cancellations.
The Mystics addressed the issue on the social media platform X, stating that individuals who obtained their tickets through Ticketmaster for the ESA game against Indiana will still have access to the event. Ticketmaster has been tasked with canceling orders, issuing refunds, and reserving comparable seats at Capital One Arena for affected buyers at the same price. Further instructions about the new seat locations and invoices will be communicated via email by Friday.
However, those who purchased tickets from third-party sellers, including StubHub, are unable to transfer their tickets to Capital One Arena, according to a Monumental Sports spokesperson. Candice Charlton, a Bethesda resident, expressed frustration after her StubHub tickets were deemed “invalid,” leading to a refund.
In response to the unprecedented demand that led to a swift sell-out of tickets for the game at Capital One Arena, the Mystics plan to release a second batch of tickets, to be announced in the coming week. Fans are encouraged to sign up for email alerts to stay updated on future ticket releases.
A Monumental Sports spokeswoman emphasized that fans should seek assistance from their original ticket merchants, noting that resale options have been limited. Ticketmaster remains the official ticketing provider and resale marketplace for the event.
