Bronny James, an eagerly anticipated talent nationwide, committed to USC last year. However, his rookie season faced a setback when he experienced a cardiac episode during a summer workout, causing him to miss the initial eight games.
Despite enduring a challenging statistical year and restricted playing time throughout the 2023–24 season, James opted to enter the 2024 NBA draft, while also considering the possibility of returning to college via the transfer portal. Around 200 players, including Bronny James, have declared as early-entry candidates for the draft, as reported by Marc J. Spears of ESPN. These players retain the option to withdraw and retain college eligibility for the 2024–2025 season until May 29.
Bronny James has been under scrutiny since his youth, especially during his tenure at Sierra Canyon High School. He, being LeBron James’ son, boasted an average of 13.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.8 steals per game during that period.
His trajectory encountered a pause when Bronny endured a cardiac incident while training with USC at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, keeping him away from basketball for five months.
Upon his return in December, James’ performance saw a decline, participating in 25 games and averaging merely 4.8 points, 2.1 assists, and 2.8 rebounds in slightly over 19 minutes per game. Consequently, the USC Trojans failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Lakers Open to Drafting Bronny James With LeBron’s Future In Doubt
Amid uncertainty about LeBron James’ future with the Lakers, the team’s season ended prematurely following Jamal Murray’s game-winning shot, propelling the Denver Nuggets to the next playoff round. LeBron James, facing potential unrestricted free agency this summer, remains contemplative about his next move, intending to assess the Lakers’ roster enhancements before making a decision.
LeBron has frequently discussed his desire to play alongside his son, Bronny James, and according to The Athletic, the Lakers are “open to the prospect” of picking him.
It’s still being determined whether the Lakers will have a first-round pick in the NBA draft of 2024. The Anthony Davis deal gave the New Orleans Pelicans the option to draft Los Angeles’ first-round pick in 2024 or 2025.
