The Dallas Mavericks crushed the dreams of the Oklahoma City Thunder by putting an end to their postseason journey. The semifinal series between the two teams witnessed several twists and turns as both were determined to bag the glorious championship trophy. However, the Mavs broke the 2-2 tie and won two straight games to clinch the series, but their ace Kyrie Irving insisted on the unfinished business.
Following the action-thriller game, Irving was requested by his teammates to give a speech in the locker room. The emotional guard said, “I just wanna thank each one of you guys” and further appreciated the sacrifices that everyone made. Irving suggested, “..keep the positivity going. Jobs not finished but we can definitely celebrate this one.”
After a marvelous win down the road, the Mavs arrived to entertain the home crowd in Game 6 with another fiery performance by the team. They had a sloppy start, which gave the Thunder a 16-point lead in the opening half, but the Mavs bounced back, scoring 35 and 34 points, respectively, in the following quarters to finish with a narrow 117-116 victory.
Luka Doncic was star of the show with his massive triple-double contribution of 29 points and 10 rebounds and assists each. Besides the Slovenian guard, Irving, too, shone brightly and ended the night with a historic milestone.
Kyrie Irving Keeps His Historical Streak Alive
Following Saturday night’s game, Kyrie Irving became the first NBA player to win all the 14 elimination games he ever participated in. The 32-year-old played a vital role in the 2016 championship finals when he helped his former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, win the Larry O’Brien Trophy against the Golden State Warriors.
With his championship experience, Irving boosts his Mavericks teammates as the missing piece in the puzzle and a key motivator in the locker room. The 8-time NBA All-Star added 22 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists in the win. Irving hit the mark with 9 shots out of the 23 he attempted and 4-of-10 shots from 3-point range.
The Mavs will wait for Sunday’s game between the Timberwolves and the Nuggets, which will decide their opponent for the Western Conference finals.
